Assignment #3
What is Universal Design for
Learning (UDL)?
Universal Design for
Learning, or UDL is a way of thinking about teaching and learning that gives
all students equal opportunity to learn. It means that a teacher designs
learning experiences in flexible ways to meet the needs of students in the
classroom. When you choose to take a UDL approach, teachers prepare the
learning environment with flexible means, methods, and materials that will
allow them to better meet the needs of every student. Now the way to execute
this can happen in a few ways. You can use a variety of methods for students to
access material, engage with it, and show what they know. In doing so, UDL
helps you meet the needs of a wide range of learners. Although UDL doesn’t
specifically target students with learning and attention issues, it can be
especially helpful for them if planned correctly. UDL can also be beneficial
for English language learners. But the flexibility benefits all learners,
at all grade levels.
Analyze the lesson with UDL
connections (why, what, how of learning).
I decided to choose a
lesson that gears towards the grade I currently work with which is second
grade. The
Life Cycle of Butterflies is a science lesson geared towards Kindergarten to
Second Grade. Some
UDL features are in the Guided & Independent section of the lesson it
provides students various opportunities to show in they have mastered the skill
and information given whether it be through written, oral, or visual
presentation, explanation or word process. Even the lesson goals are stated in
a way that prevents students from feeling that there is a certain route to take
to demonstrate their knowledge of the topic at hand.
What I noticed is the
Recognition & Affective Network which ties into the UDL framework. Some
portions provide support for limited background knowledge and sets the stage
and context for learning, while also offering different options to choose from
to gain the same knowledge. In this lesson it is highlighted to using a certain
tone of voice when speaking as well. Students learn in different ways solely because they are different as
well. In this lesson it is good to use different examples to show the life
cycle of a butterfly whether it be photographs, videos or even speaking on the
given topic.
