Assignment #2
Teaching is truly an art form that isn’t something that comes easy. In this day in age there are
struggles that both teachers and students experience. One example is the issue of diversity, which can
effect both teaching and learning. Research suggests that introducing diversity into education work
force first and then molding it into teaching and learning processes is important wherever improving
student success is a priority which it should be as a teacher in the first place. Inclusive educational
programs for both students and teachers will show them how to work with diverse students and
provide the necessary scaffolding for student success. Schools can use surveys or questionnaires to
gather the information needed to engage in practical self-assessment that puts students and their
success at the center of education.
According to the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME), multicultural
education can help students develop positive self-image of themselves, offer them an equal
educational opportunity, allows multiple perspectives and ways of thinking and can even teach
students to critique society in the interest of social justice depending on the grade level being taught.
While improving the success of diverse students and the assessment of their learning outcomes is
important, so is taking advantage of any sources that can shape the learning environment—including
faculty diversity and practices that use diversity as an asset in teaching and learning processes.
Currently it is not as easy to execute due to current curriculum which would call for schools to reform
traditional curriculum. Even from what I have observed students are misinformed and misguided. Not
all textbooks present content accurately. Using social studies as an example, curriculums focus more
on North America and Europe than any other region. In charter schools, the denomination of students
are Black and Latino which leads to automatic disconnect in learning .If change were to made in the
classrooms it would require a staff that is not only diverse, but also culturally competent. Educators
must be aware, responsive and embracing of the diverse beliefs, perspectives and experiences. They
must also be willing and ready to address issues of controversy. This will change the implications
from negative to positive for students.
