EDPC 664 Takeaways from the course
These are the great takeaways I have from the class Institutes In Education which covered programming and coding which can be inserted into lesson plans and activities.
-
Wonder Workshop, Coding Apps & Puzzles- With the use of Dash which was the robot assigned to each student f or this course, we use two apps Wonder Workshop and Blockly to figure out the coding to allow Dash to do certain movements. Throughout the app there are so many things that I think any student can get easily attached and invested into. As it pertains to the grades I work with which is K-5, some activities introduced new sounds (Dash pretended he was a dog) and new movements (Dash pretends he is a car/robot). With these lessons students are able to use Dash to identify animals, transportation and even music since we had an assignment that required Dash to dance ! Although it can be a little challenging at first, both Dash and the apps is a good starting spot for students to get into coding.
-
Weekly Design Journals - The journals served as a quick review of what went right, wrong and what can be one better when it came to our assignments. They were extremely vital to understanding coding as a whole. During the semester, the questions guided us to have a clear understanding as to the success, mistakes and how to do it better for the upcoming assignments. With prompting for younger kids and independently doing it for older, it puts students in a position to think abstractly and for an educator to see what next steps need to be taken. Not only that but it includes all the other skills in ELA, Writing and fluency. All of it attaches because they’re all skills that you need to survive.

Keystone Assignment -For our Keystone, we had to create a lesson plan and challenge that we could use to incorporate Dash the robot into a lesson for students. In my lesson, I made it for my second grade class and it was a basic intro into what Dash can do. Since Dash has so many features, I decided to just focus on the fun things Dash can do like dance, the multiple colorful lights etc. Students are to complete the challenge given to their group whether it be to make Dash dance or to utilize all the colors Dash can show at once. Codes that were used to solve the activity, a video showing how the students should solve the activity, the written lesson plan and a video explaining the lesson plan in detail.
